Small Business Saturday is Nov. 24, 2018! This annual initiative began in 2010, when American Express created it to highlight businesses with fewer than 150 employees so they could compete and build revenue during the busy holiday buying season. 

  • The U.S. Senate officially recognized the day in 2011 and participation and revenue have been steadily climbing, reaching 112 million shoppers in 2016 with sales of $15.4 billion.

Small business stats from the Small Business Administration (SBA):

  • There are 28.8 million small businesses in the country
  • Small businesses account for 99.7% of all businesses in the U.S.
  • Small businesses accounted for 64% of new jobs created in the U.S. between 1993 and 2011
  • Franchised small businesses employ roughly 8 million people and make up to 40% of all U.S. retail jobs.

  • In 2017, an estimated 108 million consumers reported shopping or dining at local, independently owned businesses on Small Business Saturday — generating roughly $12 billion in reported spending

  • The most popular businesses frequented, according to one survey:
  • Restaurants, bars and pubs (41 percent)
  • Clothing and accessories stores (24 percent)

  • In 2017, 70 percent of U.S. consumers said they were aware of Small Business Saturday, and 58 percent said they shopped or dined at more than one independently owned business over the SBS weekend.
