Feng Shui: 5 Easy Ways to Create Balance and Prosperity in Your Home

Are you unknowingly blocking good energy in your home? The way you set up your space could be working against you.

From cluttered entryways that block opportunity to misplaced furniture that disrupts balance, small design choices may have a big impact on how your home feels. And if your space feels off—stagnant, chaotic, or just not as inviting as you'd hoped—Feng Shui might hold the answers.

"Your home isn't just a place you live,” said Ashley Cantley, author of High-Vibe Feng Shui: 11 Steps to Achieving Your Best Life. She is also a social media manager at New American Funding. “It's a space that should support your well-being and the life you want to create."

Rooted in Chinese medicine, Feng Shui is both an art and a science, blending ancient wisdom with practical design principles to create balance and optimize the flow of energy (or "chi"). It’s based on the idea that your surroundings influence your well-being, success, and overall happiness.

By applying a few simple Feng Shui principles, you may be able to create a home that fosters prosperity and balance.

Start at the front door: The gateway to good energy

The entrance to your home sets the stage for the energy that flows inside.

To create a welcoming entrance, keep the path to the door clear and inviting, trim any overgrown shrubs, and add bright, lively elements such as a fresh doormat, potted plants, or a wind chime.

"The front door is the 'mouth of chi,' meaning it's where opportunities enter your home," said Cantley.

If your front door is recessed or overshadowed by a garage, placing a brass wind chime in front of the door can help draw positive energy toward it. Painting the front door a bold color—especially red—can also attract a welcoming energy.

Arrange your furniture with purpose

How you position your furniture can affect the flow in your home.

"You should always be able to see the entryway of a room when you're seated or lying down," said Cantley.

This principle, known as the 'command position,' creates a subconscious sense of ease.

In the living room, arrange seating so it faces the entrance rather than turning your back to it.

In the kitchen, avoid cooking with your back to the room. If this isn't possible, a mirror placed strategically near the stove can create a workaround.

Likewise, in the bedroom, the bed should be positioned diagonally across from the door rather than directly in line with it.

Clear the clutter to unblock energy

A cluttered home can lead to stagnant energy. This may cause stress and lack of motivation.

Broken items, dead plants, and excess furniture can all contribute to an environment that feels stuck.

"Energy blocks happen when there's too much stuff cluttering your space," said Cantley.

Keeping pathways and doorways clear improves mobility and invites fresh energy into your home.

Refresh your home's energy

When moving into a new home, cleansing the energy may be beneficial. You often don't know how the people before you lived in the home and what may have happened within the walls.

"You can feel it when a space has heavy energy," said Cantley. "After a bad fight or even after moving in, a deep cleanse can reset the energy."

Opening windows to let fresh air in, playing upbeat music, and using sage or essential oils can all help to cleanse a home.

"We're meant to be connected to nature, so let in as much natural light as possible,” said Cantley. "Even something as simple as bringing in fresh flowers or adding houseplants can breathe new life into a space.”

Use color intentionally

Color plays a powerful role in shaping the energy of a home.

"Red is one of the most powerful colors in Feng Shui," said Cantley. "It carries high energy and is great for areas that feel too quiet or isolated, like bathrooms, laundry rooms, and hallways."

While soft blues and greens promote calm and renewal, strategic pops of red can energize otherwise overlooked spaces.

Yellow can promote happiness and success, making it a potential choice for a home officer.

That’s why it’s important to intentionally choose uplifting colors for your home.

"Your home should reflect the life you want to live,” said Cantley.
